Where it comes from
Why these characters exist
Scattered rather than blocked. Most letters come from Phonetic Extensions, where a raised letter marks a modified speech sound.
What the set is missing
Incomplete and inconsistent. There is no superscript q. The digits are split across two blocks: ¹, ² and ³ are inherited from Latin-1 Supplement while ⁰ and ⁴ to ⁹ live in Superscripts and Subscripts, so the three most common exponents come from a different place than the rest.

Where superscript letters break down
The split origin means ¹²³ often render at a slightly different weight or height from ⁴⁵⁶ in the same font. Subscripts are sparser still, with no full alphabet at all. Screen readers announce these by their Unicode names or skip them, so a styled word can be read out character by character or lost entirely. Search and copy-paste also stop matching the plain spelling.
