The browser version of Word includes an emoji menu on its ribbon.
Microsoft also documents automatic conversion of some typed emoticons, such as a smile. For a specific character, choose it from the picker instead of relying on an emoticon shortcut.
An emoji inserted as a text character uses text formatting. Select just the emoji, then change its font size in Home → Font Size.
An inserted picture is different: it may have image resize handles. If you expected a character but got an image, copy an emoji from the examples below and paste it into the text instead.
Use emoji to support the text: ‘✅ Completed’ communicates more clearly than a check mark on its own. A heading or announcement usually needs only one well-chosen character.
