How to Insert Emoji in Google Docs and Sheets

On a computer, type @emoji and press Enter in Google Docs or Sheets. The menu instructions below offer another way to insert a character. Choose the reaction instructions if you want to respond to someone’s text instead.

Insert an emoji into Google Docs text

Use this when you want the character to be part of a heading, sentence or list.

  1. Open an editable document and click where you want the emoji.
  2. Choose Insert → Symbols → Emoji, or type @emoji and press Enter.
  3. Search or browse, then choose the emoji.

Docs also supports a colon search such as :cat. If that shortcut is disabled, check Tools → Preferences for ‘Insert emojis using the colon character’, or use the menu instead.

Insert an emoji into a Google Sheets cell

Select the cell you want to fill, or edit existing cell text at the desired insertion point.

  1. Choose Insert → Emoji, or type @emoji and press Enter.
  2. Choose the character from the picker.
  3. Add a word such as Done, Waiting or Due Friday so the cell is understandable without the icon.

Add an emoji reaction in Google Docs

A reaction belongs to a selected passage. Use it to acknowledge someone’s text without adding a character to the document itself.

  1. Select the text you want to react to.
  2. Choose Insert → Emoji reaction.
  3. Pick your reaction.

You need permission to comment or edit. Insert → Symbols → Emoji changes document content; Insert → Emoji reaction adds a reaction. Choose based on which result you want.

If an emoji menu or shortcut is missing

These menu instructions are for the computer interface. First check that you are in Docs or Sheets and have permission to edit the content. A viewer cannot insert text just by opening a picker.

You can also use Windows + period (.) or Control + Command + Space on a Mac after focusing the text. Try a simple test cell or paragraph first, then add the character to your finished layout.
