How to Insert Emoji in Outlook: Windows, Web & Mac

Click where the emoji should go before opening a picker. In Outlook on Windows, press Windows + period (.). On a Mac, use Control + Command + Space. Outlook on the web also has an emoji button in the message composer.

Official documentation reviewed . Menu names may vary by version.

Outlook on Windows

The Windows emoji picker inserts a character at your cursor, so you can use it while writing an email.

  1. Open a new message or a reply and click in the message body.
  2. Hold the Windows key and press period (.).
  3. Search for an emoji or browse the picker, then select it.
  4. Close the picker and continue typing.

Microsoft documents this method for Outlook for Microsoft 365 and Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016 on Windows 10 or 11. It does not depend on finding a particular ribbon button.

Outlook on the web and Outlook.com

Use the composer’s emoji menu when you are writing email in your browser.

  1. Start a message or reply.
  2. At the bottom of the composer, choose Insert emojis and GIFs.
  3. Choose an emoji from the emoji section.

The classic web interface uses an emoji icon near Send. Choose an emoji when you want text; a GIF is a different kind of content. If your toolbar differs, place the cursor in the draft and use your computer’s emoji shortcut instead.

  1. Click the insertion point in your message.

  3. Choose an emoji in the character viewer and return to the draft.

Command + Space alone opens Spotlight. Keep Control held as well to open the character viewer.

Put an emoji in the subject line

Click directly in the Subject field, then use your system picker or paste a copied emoji. For example: ‘Team celebration on Friday 🎉’. The message-body toolbar is not the place to position a subject-line character.

Keep the words that explain the email: ‘📅’ alone is less useful than ‘📅 Planning meeting on Tuesday’. Send yourself a test if the exact appearance matters; recipients may see different artwork.

An Outlook reaction is separate from an emoji in your email

A reaction responds to a received message using its reactions control. It is not a character typed into a reply. Availability depends on the account, and Microsoft documents different behavior when the sender and recipient are not both on Exchange Online.

Common questions

What is the emoji keyboard shortcut in Outlook?

On Windows, press Windows + period (.). On a Mac, press Control + Command + Space. Click in the draft first so the emoji goes into the email.

Why is the emoji going into the wrong place?

Close the picker, click the intended field or sentence, and try again. The Subject field and message body are separate insertion points. Copying an emoji from this page and pasting it there is another option.

Will everyone see the same emoji design?

Do not rely on an exact match. The recipient’s device and email app can display different artwork. Keep important information in words, especially dates, status and requests.
