Type the code into a comment or a caption exactly as it appears below: lowercase, no spaces, both brackets. While you type it stays as text, and when the comment posts TikTok replaces it with the picture. There are 46 of them, and they are the same for everyone.
The code has to match precisely. [laughwithtears] works; [laugh with tears] and [Laugh] do not.

The catch
Why they do not work anywhere else
Every emoji on the rest of this site is a Unicode character: a number that every phone agrees to draw. These are not. TikTok stores pictures and looks them up when it sees a code, so outside the app the lookup never happens and all that arrives is the text [smile].
That makes them behave like a custom emoji in a Slack workspace or a Discord server, which emoji in apps covers in more detail. If you need something that survives a copy and paste into a bio, a document or another app, use an ordinary emoji.

Usually because they are not being rendered where you typed them. The codes are an in-app feature, so they are widely reported not to work on the web version, and they never work outside TikTok. An out-of-date app is the other common cause.
Can I copy TikTok emoji to Instagram or WhatsApp?
No. They are images stored by TikTok, not Unicode characters, so there is nothing to copy. Paste a code anywhere else and you get the literal text [smile]. It is the same limitation as a custom emoji in a Slack workspace or a Discord server.
Do TikTok emoji codes work in your bio or username?
