Collection guide
A colour value is a portable recipe for reproducing a shade in design software and code. Hex, RGB and HSL describe the same colour in different forms, while the surrounding palette and display determine how it is perceived.
Modern browsers support hex, RGB and HSL. Screens, colour profiles and neighbouring colours can still make the same value appear different, so evaluate it in the intended interface.
Hex is compact, RGB is familiar for channels and HSL is convenient when adjusting lightness or saturation.
A pleasing shade is not automatically readable behind text; test foreground and background together.
Name colours by purpose such as background or accent when building a reusable design system.
Common questions
They can represent equivalent sRGB values, although rounding during conversion may produce tiny numerical differences.
Displays, brightness, colour profiles and surrounding colours all influence perception even when the underlying value is unchanged.
