How this dog face ascii art works
The ears do all the work: a slash and a backslash flare outward on the second row, then drop to vertical pipes, which is what separates a dog from the round-eared bear drawn the same way. The forehead between them is a backslash, three underscores and a forward slash, and the muzzle is a lowercase v above a small underscore mouth.
Copy it without breaking the spacing
Seven rows of near-identical width, so it depends completely on a monospace font — in a proportional one the ears drift inward and the face collapses. It also contains four backslashes, which Markdown may read as escapes and remove.

Make your own variation
Replace the v with a capital U for an open mouth, or the o eyes with hyphens for a sleeping dog. Removing the first row and shortening the ears to a single pipe each gives a short-eared breed.
