What it is for
When to reach for æ ø å
Æ, Ø and Å are letters in their own right, not decorated versions of A and O. They sort at the end of the Danish and Norwegian alphabet, after Z, which routinely surprises software that assumes otherwise.
Getting the shortcut to work
On a Nordic keyboard these have dedicated keys and need no shortcut at all — the alt codes matter mainly for people typing Nordic names on a US layout. The Windows code needs the numeric keypad with Num Lock on — the number row above the letters will not work. On a laptop without a keypad, use the copy button above or Windows Character Map.
Easily confused
Characters that look like æ ø å
These are separate characters. They may look almost identical on screen, but they sort, search and compare differently.
German and Swedish vowels
Swedish uses ä and ö where Norwegian and Danish use æ and ø. Substituting one set for the other misspells names.
Empty set ∅
The mathematical empty set is a different character. It looks nearly identical and is a common copy-paste error in technical writing.
