Instagram bio emoji

A bio has 150 characters to say who you are, and emoji stretch them. One pin says where you live, one camera says what you do, and a finger pointing down says where the link is, each in the space of a single letter.

Quick answer

The best emoji for an Instagram bio

Use emoji that do a job first: πŸ“ for where you are, πŸ“Έ or 🎨 for what you do, and πŸ‘‡ or πŸ”— for your link. Then add one or two for mood. Most good bios use between three and six, one at the start of each line.

Layout

How to lay out a bio with emoji

One emoji per line

Start each line with an emoji and it works as a bullet point, making the bio easy to scan. A common order: what you do, where you are, something personal, then the link.

Mind the 150 characters

Instagram bios are limited to 150 characters. Emoji and line breaks count towards that, so a four-line bio runs out of room sooner than it looks.

Let the words carry the facts

β€œπŸ“Έ wedding photographer” is clear; πŸ“ΈπŸ’ on its own is a guess. Screen readers also read every emoji aloud by name, so a row of five sparkles is read out as the word five times.

End with a pointer

If your profile has a link, πŸ‘‡ or πŸ”— on the last line tells people it is there. It is the one place in a bio where an arrow does real work.

Name and username

Emoji in your Instagram name and username

Instagram has two separate fields. Your username is your handle, and it sticks to letters, numbers, periods and underscores: Instagram’s own suggestion for varying a taken username is to add periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations. Emoji belong in your name, the bold line above the bio.

Keep it to one. β€œMia Hansen πŸ“Έβ€ still reads as a name, and people can still find you by searching for it. A name made mostly of emoji is hard to search and hard to remember.

Highlights and captions

Emoji for highlights and captions

Highlight names are short, so an emoji and one word label them well. The same emoji make simple highlight covers on a plain coloured background.

✈️ travel🍜 foodπŸš— road trips🐢 dogπŸ‹οΈ gymπŸ“š studyπŸŽ„ christmas🀍 favourites

In captions, one to three emoji at the end of a sentence add tone without getting in the way. Swapping words for emoji makes a caption harder to read and harder to find, so write β€œbeach day πŸŒŠβ€ and not πŸ–οΈπŸŒŠβ˜€οΈ alone.

Common questions

iPhone emoji, blue ticks and logos

iPhone emoji on Instagram

Everyone sees the emoji their own phone draws. Your Android followers see Google’s or Samsung’s version whatever you type, and apps that promise iPhone emoji only change your own screen. More in iOS and Android emoji.

The blue tick

There is no blue tick emoji. The verified badge is drawn by Instagram, and β˜‘οΈ or πŸ”΅ in a name is easy to spot as a lookalike that looks like it is trying to pass as verified.

Logos

Unicode does not encode logos, so there is no Instagram, YouTube or Snapchat emoji. See brand and logo emoji for why.

Beyond emoji

Symbols and fonts for your bio

Many aesthetic bios mix emoji with small Unicode symbols such as ✧, ☾ and β™‘, which are quieter than emoji and take on the colour of your text. Those are collected in bio symbols, and the text generator turns your name into bold, script or other styles you can paste into the name field.

Questions

Instagram bio emoji FAQ

What are the best emoji for an Instagram bio?

The ones that do a job: πŸ“ for where you are, πŸ“Έ, 🎨 or πŸ“š for what you do, βœ‰οΈ for how to reach you and πŸ‘‡ or πŸ”— for your link. Add one or two for mood, such as ✨ or 🀍. Three to six emoji is plenty for a 150-character bio.

Do emoji count towards the Instagram bio limit?

Yes. Instagram bios are limited to 150 characters, and emoji take up part of that like any other character. Line breaks use space too, so a bio with one emoji per line fills up faster than it looks.

Can I put emoji in my Instagram username?

No. Usernames stick to letters, numbers, periods and underscores; Instagram's own tip for varying a taken username is to add periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations. Emoji can go in your name instead, the bold line above your bio.

How do I get iPhone emoji on Instagram on Android?

You cannot make other people see Apple's emoji. Instagram shows each person the emoji their own phone draws, so an Android follower sees Google's or Samsung's version of the same character whatever you use. Apps that promise iPhone emoji on Android replace the font on your phone only, and are best avoided.

Is there a blue tick emoji for Instagram?

No. The verified badge is drawn by Instagram next to eligible accounts, not typed. Lookalikes such as β˜‘οΈ or πŸ”΅ in a name are easy to spot, and look like an attempt to pass as verified.

Is there an Instagram logo emoji?

No. Unicode does not encode company logos, so there is no Instagram, YouTube or Snapchat emoji. The logos you see in some bios are images or custom stickers and will not survive being copied as text.
